The Glass Closet

Have you heard? There's a thing called a glass closet! I didn't even realize what it was or if I was in one until I heard someone talking about it. Basically it's this - you've come out! Hurrah for you! But despite this fact you are somehow still being forced to live your life in a closeted way. For example, friends or family unwilling to talk about or dismissing the fact that you are gay. Friends or family not including your partner (for those who have partners) in family events - for example; Christmas dinner.

No, this did not happen to me. My mother is in fact very supportive and keeps me a breast of all the latest "gay news" Such as; "Did you hear Meredith Baxter is GAY!" and continually professes how much she loves Ellen.

I kinda had a glass closet going on with a friend I came out to over a year ago tho. And once I knew there was a glass closet - and what it was, and that I was in it, I decided to jump out like a big'ole gay boogie(wo)man of coming outdom past.

"OOoooo I'm the ghost of gayness past!!!! OOOOooo"

So, when I suggested we should go back and visit Vancouver and she said "Yeay! We can go visit your boyfriend at Grandville Island!" (a guy who wouldn't let go of my hand and insisted on demonstrating how his invention could keep homeless people's fingers from freezing) I said "He's probably what made me gay." and laughed.

I don't know if she laughed out of shock, or because I'm damn funny. (which of course we all know I am.) But it was nice to pull the dust cover off the elephant and we actually had a really relaxed visit the rest of the evening.

*poof*

One glass closet disassembled.

Well, I gotta run. But just so you know, I love you. In that gay way.
Keep on truckin' babes!
